Buffy the Vampire Slayer producer Carol Baum recently took aim at "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney's career and appearance.
According to E! News, Baum shared her thoughts on Sweeney during an April 11th screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers, relaying that she thinks the rising star is "not pretty" and "can't act"
"There's an actress who everybody loves now, Sydney Sweeney. I don't get Sydney Sweeney." The acclaimed producer watched Anyone But You during a plane ride and explained that she did not understand the hype.
"Explain this girl to me. She's not pretty, she can't act. Why is she so hot?''
A rep for Sweeney responded to the harsh criticism in a statement shared with E! News on Wednesday (April 17).
"How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman. If that's what she's learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that's shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum's character."
New York Times film critic Janet Maslin, who was present at the screening, advocated for Baum's behavior stating that the producer simply "brought up Anyone But You because it's been the rare smash hit rom-com at a time when they aren't working. Not because we wanted to take cheap shots at anyone."
Sweeney, 26, is just learning how to navigate public scrutiny. During a March interview with Today, the actress commented on how she deals with the newly-acquired mass media critique of every aspect of her life.
"I kind of just have to take [it] day by day and just keep being myself...of course it's not natural. I'm just trying to figure out how to deal with all of it."
E!News reached out to Baum for a response regarding Sweeney's statement and has yet to hear back.
