Just Like Humans, Birds Have Self-Control

Here's today's feel-good story:

Birds have a ton of self-control, just like humans.

For instance, the Eurasian jays can resist jumping on a snack when they know that waiting will bring an even better one.

The study, based on a 1972 study, looked to spot similarities in cognitive traits between humans and birds. Birds such as jays, magpies, crows, and ravens are sometimes referred to as "feathered apes."

“In multiple trials, I sat there watching JayLo ignore a piece of cheese for over five minutes. I was getting bored, but she was just patiently waiting for the worm,” said Dr. Alex Schnell, of the University of Cambridge. “It is just mind-boggling that some jays can wait so long for their favorite food.”
