Masked Wolf: the Grind It Took Him From Depressed Salesman to Chart-Topper

“What you know about rolling down in the deep?” You have most likely by now have had TikTok-beloved track "Astronaut In the Ocean" stuck in your head, but do you know the artist behind the track? Ryan Seacrest connected with Aussie rapper Masked Wolf on-air on Monday, May 10, and learn his fascinating (and inspiring) story from depressed salesman to chart-topper.

Wolf, whose real name is Harry, dropped "Astronaut In The Ocean" via YouTube back in 2019 but it wasn't until the pandemic and TikTok until it took off. The track, which is an entire vibe in itself that you want to blast, is really about battling depression.

"I started in real estate believe it or not," Wolf shared with Seacrest. "And then I ventured into like corporate suits. … I was very unhappy while I was working. Like, literally depressed. … I called [my mom] crying after work one day and I was like, 'I don’t get how these people enjoy' ... I was like, 'I don’t get how this is life.' … And I said to my mom 'I have to do music.'"

The 29-year-old added that the "grind" was always there for him to become a rapper and that his battle with finding purpose was the inspiration for the track.

"That's the whole point; I guess because I worked in sales, and this might sound cheesy, but I’ve been in business my whole life like sometimes expecting the unexpected can be very powerful," he explained. "When you hear the song it's a banger and you want to play it in your car when you're driving on a Sunday, but when you dive deeper into the song and you get into the ocean you realize it's about me feeling out of place. … I think that's what picked it up," Wolf added of the track gaining popularity on TikTok during the global pandemic. "… Because a lot of people felt like that."
