WARNING: New viral challenge sending people to hospital with burns!

People in the frozen Midwest are being warned no to do the boiling water challenge.

As a polar vortex sent temperatures plunging below zero last week, a challenge went viral that features people throwing boiling water in the air and watching it freeze instantly. Hospitals in the region say the challenge is sending people to the emergency room.

A spokeswoman for Chicago's Loyola University Medical Center says eight people who took part in the challenge have been treated at their burn center. Burn victims have also been reported in Minneapolis and Iowa City. Officials say some the victims have been spectators watching the stunt.

If you insist on doing the challenge, use a small amount of hot water and wear protective clothing. Have spectators stay at a safe distance away from the thrown water. Since many people have burned because the wind catches the water, check for wind direction. However, experts say don’t try it, just watch the videos.
