As we close in on Mother's Day, it's time to look - again - at what a SAHM (Stay-At-Home Mom) should be paid for being a momma... ๐ค๐ธ Over the years, many groups have tried to figure out how much moms should earn for the 18 or so jobs they do in the course of a day. Salary.com says moms should get $184,820! ๐ฒ๐ฐ While you can't really put a dollar amount on the love and nurturing moms provide, economists say you can use Labor Department data to figure the market value for the work moms do. ๐๐
According to the American Time Use Survey, the average married mother who isn't employed outside the home and has a child under age 18 spends around 6.4-hours a day on childcare and household-related tasks. ๐ก๐ถ Here's a breakdown of how that time is spent and how much stay-at-home moms would get based on the average pay for those jobs:
๐ผ Child care - 2.63 hours: At $13.22 per hour (average day care services wage), it comes to $34.77 a day.
๐งน Housework - 1.57 hours: At $14.40 per hour (median housekeepers wage), moms would earn $22.61 a day for cleaning.
๐ณ Food prep and cleanup - 1.79 hours: At $24.11 per hour (average chef wage), they'd make $43.16 a day for cooking.
๐ Travel related to kids - 0.31 hours: At $18.05 per hour (average passenger vehicle drivers wage), moms would get $5.59 a day for driving their kids.
๐ฟ Lawn and garden care - 0.10 hours: At $17.26 per hour (grounds maintenance workers wage), a mom would get $1.73 for lawn work.
Adding all that pay up for 365 days a year would give moms an annual salary of $39,368.90. ๐ต๐ But let's be real, do these amounts of time seem low to you? How many jobs do you feel like you do in a day as a mom? What do you spend the most time on? Share your thoughts in the comments below! ๐๐ฃ๏ธ
